Thanksgiving Dinner

For more than ten years,  the Bar Association has been involved as a partner with the Frederick County Salvation Army for their annual “Thanksgiving Dinner.” The goal of the project is to serve area families with a homemade Thanksgiving meal during the holiday season.  The project has evolved over time and today, the Bar Association not only serves and prepares the meal, but Bar members also contribute approximately 90 percent of the food to make the event possible.

The complete Thanksgiving meal includes turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, vegetables, rolls, yams,  cranberry sauce,  pumpkin pie, hot beverages  and serves approximately 400 persons, including area families, individuals and the elderly.

Bar  Members volunteer to serve from 11am to 6pm the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Annual Charity Art Auction

The Bar Association of Frederick County’s largest annual philanthropic event is the Annual Charity Art Auction.  In the past six years, the Bar Association has donated more than $76,000 to local charities.  Past beneficiaries include the Alzheimer’s Association, CASS, Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County, The Interfaith Housing Alliance, Way Station, Inc., and Families Plus!.

The 7th Annual Charity Art Auction will be held Friday, March 14, 2008 at  Dutch's Daughter beginning at 5:30 p.m.  The Arc of Frederick County, Inc. is this years beneficiary.

Marlin Galleries conducts the annual auction, which features more that 150 custom framed and matted works of art including: documented sports memorabilia, estate jewelry, lithographs, serigraphs, animation cels, watercolors and original oils signed by the artist.

Partnership with Frederick County Public Schools

The Bar Association of Frederick County is involved with several annual Frederick County Public School events.

Bar Association members volunteer many hours serving as coaches and judges for the annual MSBA Mock Trial Tournament.  The county champions are honored each year at a Bar Association luncheon where they are treated to lunch and receive awards for their achievements.

As a part of Frederick County high school graduation requirements, seniors must be interviewed by county professionals and be critiqued on their performance.  Twice a year, Bar Association members travel to county high schools and volunteer as interviewers.

Law Week

The Bar Association’s annual Law Week is held during the first week of May and aims to increase community awareness about the legal process in Frederick County.

During the week, volunteer attorneys visit county high schools, middle schools and senior citizen centers to speak on various law related subjects.  Popular topics include constitutional law, juvenile law, family law, civil law, elder law, environmental law and careers in the law.  Each year, the Bar Association members give over 25 presentations throughout Frederick County.

Law Week also offers students the chance to witness the daily proceedings of the Frederick County Courthouse.  On one day, District and Circuit Court judges allow students to sit in on the morning proceedings of their courtrooms and grant them question and answer time.  Also during their time at the courthouse, visiting students are invited to a Bar Association-sponsored mock trial, where they serve as jurors.

Annual School Supply Drive

Since 2005, the Bar Association partnered with Community Agency School Services (CASS) in Frederick County to donate money toward the purchase of school supplies for the over 800 families in the county who need them each school year.

In the program's first year, the Bar Association donated over $5,300 toward the purchase of these supplies and will continue to hold the fundraiser annually.
